My Manager Was Having an Affair With a 21-Year-Old

Oh. My. God. You guys. I have workplace gossip, and I swear, if this had happened in a movie, I would’ve called it unrealistic.

So, let me give you some context first.

I was working in a team of twelve people under our manager. Our previous manager had been replaced about a year earlier, and honestly, the new manager was actually pretty good at his job. No complaints. He seemed professional, knew what he was doing, and, at least initially, everything was going smoothly.

But you know how sometimes there’s that one thing happening right under your nose, and you’re so busy living your own life that you don’t notice it until someone points it out?

Yeah. Apparently, something was going on in our office, and I was the last person to catch on.

A few months after our new manager joined, one of my colleagues started noticing some weird changes in another teammate. Let’s call her Y.

Y was just 21 years old and working as an intern. At first, there was nothing particularly unusual about her. She was just another colleague, doing her work and going about her day.

But then my colleague started noticing a pattern.

Y would finish her lunch unusually quickly and head out for a walk almost every day. Now, there’s absolutely nothing suspicious about finishing your lunch early or going for a walk. People need fresh air. People have lives. We weren’t about to start investigating someone’s lunch schedule.

But then something happened that made the whole thing look a little different.

One afternoon, another coworker arrived at the office for his shift and happened to stop by a coffee shop nearby. And guess who he spotted there?

Our manager.

And sitting with him was Y.

Now, before anyone says anything, let me be clear: coworkers can date. Adults can fall in love with whoever they want. That’s not the issue here.

THE MAN WAS 38 YEARS OLD, MARRIED, AND HAD TWO LITTLE KIDS.

And the girl he was allegedly getting involved with was a 21-year-old intern working under him.

EXCUSE ME???

When our coworker came back and told us what he’d seen, you can imagine the reaction. Suddenly, those little lunch breaks and daily walks started looking a lot more interesting.

Of course, we didn’t know the full story. We weren’t sitting inside their relationship, and none of us had any idea what was actually happening behind closed doors. But let’s just say the situation was giving everyone a LOT to think about.

Still, we decided to mind our own business. It wasn’t our relationship, and we didn’t want to get involved in something that had nothing to do with us.

Or at least, that’s what we told ourselves.

Because, apparently, the universe had other plans.

A little later, our manager made a mistake that I still cannot believe happened.

HE SENT A PRIVATE MESSAGE TO THE GROUP.

YES. THE GROUP.

I don’t remember every little detail of the message now, but the mistake itself was enough to leave everyone stunned. Suddenly, we weren’t just dealing with rumours about coffee-shop meetings anymore. There was now a message that made the situation even harder to ignore.

And what did twelve corporate employees do when faced with a scandal that could potentially turn their entire workplace upside down?

Absolutely nothing.

We went silent.

Because that’s corporate life for you. You can witness the most unbelievable drama of your career, but the moment you remember that you still need your salary, your brain immediately goes, Nope. I saw nothing. I heard nothing. I am simply here to complete my tasks.

So we carried on as usual. We attended meetings, finished our work, ate lunch, and pretended that our manager’s personal life wasn’t slowly turning into a season finale.

And then one day, MY PHONE RANG.

It was an unknown number.

I ignored it at first, but the person kept calling. By the third attempt, I figured it might be something important, so I finally picked up.

“Hello, who is this?” I asked.

And the woman on the other end immediately hit me with a question I was absolutely not prepared for.

“Are you the woman my husband is cheating on me with?”

I SWEAR TO GOD, MY BRAIN STOPPED WORKING FOR A SECOND.

What???

I had answered the phone expecting literally anything else. A delivery person, a wrong number, some random telemarketing call. But THIS?

I sat there trying to process what she’d just asked me.

“Who is this? I think you have the wrong number. How am I supposed to know who you are if you haven’t even told me your name? And I’m not dating anyone. Even if I were, why would I get involved with a man who cheats?” I replied, trying to stay calm.

But the woman wasn’t satisfied.

“Then who is that woman my husband is talking to?” she demanded.

At this point, I was getting frustrated.

“WHO IS YOUR HUSBAND?” I asked.

And then she told me his name.

GIRL.

GIRL.

GIRLLLLLLLL.

MY BRAIN CONNECTED THE DOTS SO FAST I DESERVE AN AWARD.

It was HIM.

OUR MANAGER.

The married man. The father of two. The man who was allegedly meeting our 21-year-old intern at a coffee shop.

And now his wife was calling ME, asking if I was the woman he was cheating with.

I was genuinely speechless. Out of all the people she could’ve called, why was I being dragged into this? I had absolutely nothing to do with their relationship!

So I told her firmly, “Look, I’m not the woman you’re looking for. And honestly, I hate that man to death.”

Then I ended the call.

I just sat there thinking, What on earth is happening? How did I become a character in this woman’s marriage without even auditioning for the role?

But here’s where things got even crazier.

THE NEXT DAY, I WENT TO THE OFFICE.

And apparently, I wasn’t the only woman who had received that phone call.

HIS WIFE HAD BEEN CALLING OUR FEMALE COLLEAGUES ONE BY ONE.

Same question. Same suspicion. Same awkward conversation.

Imagine being a woman working a completely ordinary shift, minding your own business, and suddenly receiving a call from your manager’s wife asking whether you’re sleeping with her husband.

I WOULD HAVE THROWN MY PHONE ACROSS THE ROOM.

By the time we all started talking about it, the office atmosphere was something else. Nobody knew exactly what was going on at home, what his wife had discovered, or how much she knew about Y.

But we could all agree on one thing: this was no longer just some rumour about two coworkers getting coffee.

And then came the next surprise.

OUR MANAGER ACTUALLY SHOWED UP TO WORK.

I genuinely wasn’t expecting him to come in that day. After what had happened, I thought he might take a day off, disappear for a while, or at least have the decency to look embarrassed.

But no. He came in like a man who had absolutely nothing to worry about.

Meanwhile, my colleague and I were sitting there discussing the situation.

We were wondering whether his wife had called Y, too. And if she had, what on earth had Y said? Did she deny everything? Did she try to explain? Did she even know that his wife had started calling people at the office?

We had questions. So many questions.

Unfortunately, neither of us had answers.

Eventually, we got back to work because, shocking as it may seem, the company still expected us to do our jobs while our manager’s marriage was apparently going through a full-blown crisis.

Then lunchtime arrived.

And THIS was the moment when everything went from office gossip to a live-action drama.

Our entire team was sitting in the cafeteria, eating and talking as usual. Our manager was there, too, and he seemed completely absorbed in his food.

I mean, this man was eating like he didn’t have a single problem in the world.

And then, out of nowhere, we noticed a woman standing outside the cafeteria.

At first, we didn’t think much of it. But then we got a better look.

IT WAS HIS WIFE.

I cannot explain the feeling that went through our table at that exact moment.

One by one, we looked at each other.

Nobody said anything, but I swear we were having an entire conversation with our eyes.

Is that her?

OH MY GOD, THAT’S HER.

WHY IS SHE HERE?

GIRL, HE’S RIGHT THERE.

And the funniest part?

OUR MANAGER HADN’T EVEN NOTICED HER.

He was still busy eating.

SIR. PLEASE PUT THE FOOD DOWN. YOUR PAST IS ABOUT TO CATCH UP WITH YOU.

His wife walked straight into the cafeteria.

No hesitation. No stopping to ask for directions. No looking around as if she wasn’t sure where she was.

She knew exactly where she was going.

And before anyone could even process what was happening—

SMACK!

SHE SLAPPED HIM.

HARD.

The plate he was holding went flying out of his hands and crashed onto the floor.

EVERYONE FROZE.

The conversations stopped. People turned around. Forks paused halfway to mouths. And our manager just sat there, looking like someone had unplugged his entire nervous system.

I’M SORRY, BUT IMAGINE BEING IN A CAFETERIA, JUST TRYING TO EAT YOUR LUNCH, AND SUDDENLY WITNESSING YOUR MANAGER GETTING SLAPPED INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION.

His wife was absolutely furious. She started confronting him, and from the way she was speaking, it was clear that she had reached her limit.

I don’t remember every word she said to him, but the message was unmistakable: she was done.

She didn’t seem interested in pretending everything was fine anymore. Whatever had been happening in their marriage, she wasn’t going to quietly swallow her anger and walk away as if nothing had happened.

And then she turned towards Y.

  1. MY. GOD.

THE LOOK SHE GAVE THAT GIRL.

I was sitting there thinking, Please, somebody tell me this isn’t really happening in front of us.

But his wife didn’t slap Y. Instead, she said something that, honestly, I still remember because it was so direct.

She told her to focus on her career.

She pointed out that getting involved with a married man who was also her manager was not going to build her future. She warned her not to let herself get caught up in a situation that could damage her reputation and career.

Then she said something along the lines of:

“You think you’re gaining something from this, but look around you. Look at your colleagues. They know what’s been happening. You might not even realise how humiliating this situation has become for you. You’re still young. Focus on your career. Don’t bring shame to your parents by standing beside someone who has put you in this position.”

AND THEN SHE WALKED AWAY.

JUST LIKE THAT.

I’M SORRY, BUT THAT WAS A WHOLE SPEECH.

She had come into that cafeteria furious, confronted her husband in front of everyone, delivered a warning to Y, and walked out.

Meanwhile, our manager was left sitting there in complete shock, with his lunch on the floor and an entire cafeteria full of people who had just witnessed the downfall of his professional image.

And Y?

That poor girl looked like she was about to burst into tears.

Nobody knew what she was thinking or what had actually happened between them. But the atmosphere was so uncomfortable that I don’t think anyone at our table knew where to look.

We had spent weeks trying to act like we knew nothing.

And now?

WE HAD FRONT-ROW SEATS TO THE FINALE.

The next day, neither my manager nor Y came to the office.

And then we found out that both of them had resigned.

BOTH.

I don’t know what happened after they left. I don’t know whether his wife had discovered something else, whether there had been a confrontation at home, or whether they simply decided that returning to the office after that incident would be unbearable.

All I know is that, after that day, neither of them was part of our workplace anymore.

And honestly? I still don’t know where they are now.

But the story doesn’t end there, because even after everything that happened, our team had one final debate.

Some colleagues believed the wife was completely wrong to show up at the office and confront them in public. They argued that a marriage is a personal matter and that whatever problems existed between husband and wife should have been handled privately at home.

And I can understand that argument. Public confrontations can get messy, and nobody knows everything that happens inside someone else’s marriage.

But personally?

I cannot pretend I wasn’t secretly entertained.

I KNOW. I KNOW. I SHOULD PROBABLY BE MORE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS.

But listen, I wasn’t the one who cheated on anyone. I wasn’t the one who allegedly got involved with a married colleague. And I certainly wasn’t the one who decided that the cafeteria was the perfect place to have the most dramatic lunch break in corporate history.

I was just a woman trying to do her job.

And somehow, I ended up receiving an interrogation call from my manager’s wife and witnessing a public confrontation that I will probably remember for the rest of my life.

THE PLOT TWIST IS THAT I DIDN’T EVEN HAVE TO WATCH A DRAMA SERIES. THE DRAMA SERIES WAS HAPPENING AT MY OFFICE.

And the best part?

I didn’t have to pay for a subscription.

I got the entire season for free.

With lunch included. 💀
